Writing Center offers menu of graduate student writing support services this spring
Whether they prefer a group environment, one-on-one consulting or a structured environment for independent work, the UC Davis Writing Center offers writing support for graduate and professional students across all disciplines.
“This spring, we offer a suite of services to meet the many complex needs of our graduate and professional students,” said Erica Cirillo-McCarthy, Writing Center Director. “Our services are designed to help our graduate students succeed in their writing and thrive in their programs.”
Listed below are some of the spring 2025 events planned. Students can find more details and registration information on the Writing Center Events web page.
One-on-one consultations
Meet with a trained writing consultant either in person or online. The center recently expanded its hours to include 2-8 p.m. Sundays online. Students can work on seminar papers, theses, dissertations, conference presentations, publications, and job market documents. Graduate students should make an appointment through the Writing Center website.
Writing partnerships
Writing partnerships are recurring weekly appointments with the same consultant during a quarter. Writers can work on longer projects, such as theses, dissertations and manuscripts. They can also plan a sustainable writing calendar and work on all stages of the writing process: gathering data, organizing, synthesizing sources, incorporating feedback and editing. Visit the writing partnership request form online.
Spring 2025 Dissertation Writing Retreats
The Writing Center offers two five-day Spring dissertation writing retreats to help graduate students make progress on their dissertations. The first retreat was April 21-25 and conducted in the evenings from 5 to 8 p.m. A second retreat, set for May 12-16, will run from 9 a.m. to noon. The retreats include a goal-setting workshop, a quiet and collegial setting for independent work along with a community of motivated writers. Both retreats are conducted in person at the UC Davis Writing Center on the fourth floor of the Teaching and Learning Complex. Register online for both retreats.
Weekly academic writing groups
Graduate and professional students from all programs and levels may drop in on weekly academic writing offered online via Zoom 3-4 p.m. Sundays or in person from 4-5 p.m. Wednesdays at the UC Davis Writing Center on the fourth floor of the Teaching and Learning Complex. The writing groups are designed to help students make progress on their writing goals, find community and hold themselves accountable. No registration is required for these drop-in events.
